Project background and objectives
The Okoličné Hydropower Plant project in Slovakia represents an innovative approach to modernising energy management. The project integrated an advanced battery energy storage system rated at 550 kW and 1,118 kWh, which is key to optimising electricity trading and increasing the flexibility of the entire energy system. These parameters refer exclusively to the battery storage system, not to the hydropower plant itself.
Solution and technical specification
The project combines a traditional renewable source with modern energy storage technology. The key technical parameters of the battery storage system are:
- Power: 550 kW
- Capacity: 1,118 kWh
The system enables efficient storage of surplus energy generated by the hydropower plant. This energy can then be used at times of higher demand or when market prices are favourable, helping to optimise overall energy management.
Functionality and benefits
- Electricity trading: the system allows strategic energy storage – surplus energy is stored when prices are low and used during peaks, improving economic efficiency.
- Operational flexibility: rapid adaptation to changes in demand keeps the distribution grid stable and optimises the use of generated energy.
- Renewable optimisation: integration with the hydropower plant maximises the use of renewable energy, reducing operating costs and increasing energy self-sufficiency.
Control software and integration
To ensure efficient operation, an advanced control software solution was implemented in the system that:
- continuously monitors the status of the battery storage system and optimises charging and discharging,
- responds dynamically to changing market conditions and electricity demand,
- ensures smooth integration between the hydropower plant and the storage system, contributing to overall system stability.
Outcome and outlook
By implementing a battery storage system with 550 kW of power and 1,118 kWh of capacity, the Okoličné Hydropower Plant project has achieved a significant improvement in electricity trading and energy system flexibility. The project:
- optimises electricity trading – strategic storage and use of energy improves the economic efficiency of operations,
- increases grid stability – rapid adaptation to changing demand supports the smooth operation of the distribution grid,
- provides a model for further innovation – integrating modern energy storage technologies opens up opportunities for similar solutions in the renewable energy sector.
The project demonstrates how a modern battery storage system can contribute to sustainable and flexible energy management.
