About the project

For MG Power a.s., we delivered a large-scale battery storage system in Velká Bíteš with a usable power of 10 MW and a capacity of 27 MWh. It is a stand-alone TESLA BESS – a battery system that is not directly tied to a specific generation source and operates as an independent flexible asset in the power system. In terms of its parameters, the project ranks among the largest stand-alone battery storage systems built in the Czech Republic. The system is designed primarily for balancing services, fast power regulation and the provision of flexibility.

Project background

A modern power system needs an ever-growing number of fast, controllable assets that can respond quickly to imbalances between generation and consumption.

The battery storage system in Velká Bíteš was therefore designed with an emphasis on:

  • fast response,
  • precise power control,
  • high operational flexibility,
  • safety,
  • reliable communication with energy infrastructure.

The BESS can change its output quickly and respond to the current state of the grid, providing the technological basis for balancing services and other forms of energy flexibility.

Stand-alone battery storage

Velká Bíteš is designed as a stand-alone battery storage system.

Unlike batteries integrated directly with, for example, a photovoltaic plant or wind farm, this system is not operationally tied to a specific generation source.

Its main role is to act as an independent flexible energy asset that can draw energy from the grid or feed it back, depending on current needs.

This means the battery's capacity and power can be used directly according to the needs of the power system and the energy market.

Technical solution

The battery storage system consists of six battery containers using LiFePO₄ technology.

The entire system is divided into three separate power blocks. Each block contains:

  • 2 battery containers,
  • 1 Siemens Gamesa power SKID.

The result is a modular system with a total usable power of 10 MW and a capacity of 27 MWh.

Key technical parameters

  • power: 10 MW,
  • capacity: 27 MWh,
  • number of battery containers: 6,
  • number of power blocks: 3,
  • battery technology: EVE Energy, LiFePO₄,
  • inverter technology: Siemens Gamesa,
  • design: stand-alone TESLA BESS,
  • main use: balancing services and power flexibility.

EVE Energy technology

The Velká Bíteš project uses battery technology from EVE Energy.

The battery containers are equipped with liquid cooling, which helps keep the battery cells at a stable operating temperature and contributes to optimal operating conditions and service life.

The containers are also insulated to limit the system's own energy consumption for thermal management, and they are custom-built in the European Union.

Liquid cooling and thermal management

In a large-scale battery system, proper temperature control is one of the key prerequisites for safe and stable operation.

The Velká Bíteš system therefore uses high-efficiency liquid cooling.

This makes it possible to:

  • maintain a stable temperature regime for the battery modules,
  • even out temperature differences within the system,
  • support long battery life,
  • manage the technology's own consumption more efficiently.

Balancing services and flexibility

The Velká Bíteš BESS is primarily intended for balancing services.

Thanks to its high power, fast response and precise control, it can respond to changes in the power system and switch rapidly between charging and discharging as required.

The system can thus act as an active asset that helps to:

  • balance short-term differences between generation and consumption,
  • regulate power,
  • provide flexibility,
  • support the stability of the power system.

Secure control and cybersecurity

Secure communication and control of the entire battery system is another important part of the project.

The BESS is equipped with a local control unit that limits the risk of unwanted third-party access and ensures secure communication with the supervisory system.

According to the project press release, the solution was designed with the requirements of the European NIS2 directive in mind.

24/7 monitoring and service

The battery storage system is connected to the TESLA Energy Group in-house dispatch centre, which provides round-the-clock monitoring of system operation.

Monitored parameters include:

  • temperatures,
  • pressure,
  • power,
  • operating status of individual system components.

The connection to the in-house dispatch centre makes it possible to quickly identify any abnormal operating conditions and initiate a service response.

The investor's view

The Velká Bíteš project builds on TESLA Energy Group's previous collaboration with MG Power on the battery storage system in Kuřim.

“For us, Velká Bíteš follows on from the operation of the Kuřim storage facility and confirms MG Power's direction: to build and operate stand-alone battery storage as a fully fledged part of Czech energy infrastructure.” — Gustav Urbánek, CEO MG Power a.s.

For projects of this size, the investor also emphasises the importance of safety, fast response, precise power control and long-term reliability.

Project outcome

The result is a large-scale 10 MW / 27 MWh battery storage system that combines EVE Energy battery technology, Siemens Gamesa inverter technology, liquid cooling, secure local control and round-the-clock monitoring.

The project lays the technological foundation for:

  • providing balancing services,
  • fast power regulation,
  • commercial use of flexibility,
  • supporting the stability of the power system,
  • long-term operation of large-scale storage.

Velká Bíteš demonstrates the use of stand-alone battery storage as an independent element of modern energy infrastructure – with high power, fast response and the ability to actively respond to the needs of the power system.
