Project background and objectives
Slovak company SSE – EGEM Panické Dravce, s.r.o. has implemented a modern battery energy storage system rated at 1,250 kW and 1,398 kWh. The project focuses on providing ancillary services to SEPS and contributes to the stability and reliability of the national transmission grid. The innovative solution enables a rapid response to changes in electricity demand and keeps the energy system flexible in a dynamic operating environment.
Solution and technical specification
The battery storage system is designed to meet the demanding requirements of transmission grid support. Key technical parameters of the system:
- Power: 1,250 kW
- Capacity: 1,398 kWh
The system is equipped with advanced control features and safety mechanisms that allow it to respond instantly to changes in grid voltage and frequency. As a result, it can provide important ancillary services that increase the overall stability of the distribution grid.
Functionality and benefits
- Ancillary services for SEPS: the storage system provides fast frequency and voltage regulation, helping to balance grid load and prevent outages.
- Flexibility and rapid adaptation: the system's high power and capacity allow an immediate response to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand, reducing the risk of grid instability.
- Energy system optimisation: efficient storage and subsequent use of energy reduces the need for reserve sources and contributes to overall energy efficiency.
- Support for innovation: implementing a modern storage system demonstrates the company's commitment to innovation and the development of sustainable energy infrastructure.
Control software and integration
The battery storage system is managed by advanced control software that provides:
- continuous monitoring of the storage system's status and performance,
- dynamic optimisation of charging and discharging based on current operating conditions,
- seamless integration with existing SEPS systems, enabling fast and efficient communication between the individual elements of the power grid,
- real-time data that supports better control and planning of transmission grid operation.
Outcome and outlook
With this project, SSE – EGEM Panické Dravce, s.r.o. has gained a modern solution that:
- increases transmission grid stability – a rapid response to changes in the grid supports smooth operation and load balancing,
- supports electricity trading – efficient storage and subsequent use of energy allows better adaptation to market conditions,
- paves the way for further innovation – the technologies used provide a model that can be applied in other segments of the energy sector.
The project demonstrates how modern battery storage can make a significant contribution to stabilising and modernising energy infrastructure in Slovakia.
