Project context
The ČSM Sever site is a specific industrial location with high demands on the technical solution and construction preparation.
The aim of the project is to create a large-scale battery energy storage system capable of responding quickly to the needs of the power grid and actively participating in the energy market.
The BESS will be used mainly for:
- providing ancillary services,
- power control and regulation,
- commercial use of flexibility,
- active power management within energy markets.
Technical solution
The project is built around a TESLA Energy battery storage system with an output of 20 MW and a capacity of 60 MWh.
Key technical parameters
- BESS power: 20 MW,
- BESS capacity: 60 MWh,
- location: OKD ČSM Sever, Stonava,
- use: ancillary services and flexibility,
- part of the solution: electrical power infrastructure,
- control: control and communication technology,
- power evacuation: part of the comprehensive project.
The entire solution is designed as an integrated energy system that combines battery technology, control, communication and connection to the site's energy infrastructure.
Ancillary services and flexibility
The battery storage system is intended for active use within the power system.
Thanks to its high power and fast regulation, the system will enable:
- rapid changes in charging and discharging power,
- the provision of ancillary services,
- controlled use of flexibility,
- active participation in energy markets,
- precise response to operational requirements.
The BESS will therefore not act merely as an energy reservoir but as an actively controlled energy resource.
Specific conditions of an undermined area
One of the key technical aspects of the project is its location in an area classified as undermined territory, construction site groups I–II.
The entire structural design of the project has to be adapted accordingly.
The increased requirements concern in particular:
- the foundations of the structures,
- the structural design,
- the stability of the technology components,
- the interface between the civil and technology parts,
- the long-term operational safety of the equipment.
The project therefore requires close integration of the civil, technology and energy design.
Comprehensive project preparation and permitting
The project is not limited to the supply of the battery technology itself.
The scope also includes:
- project preparation,
- obtaining the necessary permits,
- civil works,
- electrical installation works,
- supply and installation of the technology,
- integration of the control and communication systems,
- power evacuation,
- commissioning of the entire system.
As a result, the project is delivered as a complete package, from initial preparation through to a fully operational energy system.
Functional tests and trial operation
Once the civil and technology parts are completed, the functionality of the entire system will be comprehensively verified.
The project will include:
- functional tests of the individual technologies,
- verification of communication and control,
- checks of the power parameters,
- testing of the operating modes,
- trial operation before full commercial use.
This process will ensure that the battery storage system is fully prepared for the required power and operating modes before standard operation begins.
A large-scale energy asset
With an output of 20 MW and a capacity of 60 MWh, the ČSM Sever project will be a significant flexible energy resource.
Its main benefit lies in the combination of:
- high power,
- long storage duration,
- fast regulation,
- potential for commercial use,
- readiness for ancillary services.
The result is a robust energy asset suited to active operation within modern decentralised energy systems.
Project outcome
On completion, a large-scale battery storage system with an output of 20 MW and a capacity of 60 MWh will be in place at the OKD ČSM Sever site in Stonava.
The project covers the entire process, from preparation and permitting through civil and technology implementation to testing and trial operation.
The result will be a system ready for:
- providing ancillary services,
- fast power regulation,
- commercial use of flexibility,
- active participation in energy markets.
The OKD ČSM Sever project is a comprehensive large-scale BESS solution that combines high power, robust technology and the demanding construction conditions specific to undermined territory.
